![]() ![]() The title couple is pretty much what the story is about, but how Russell uses it is just so wonderfully twisted. In fact, Russell’s Bathory is well done not only in terms of historical accuracy but also in terms of a believable reason.īut honesty, the best story in the collection is “The Runaway Lovers”. The stories are good examples of why writers like Stephen King enjoy Russell. The other two S stories make use of Jekyll and Hyde as well as Elizabeth Bathory. The ending of this story is particularly good. It was “Sardonicus”, a story about a physician who tracks to castle to deal with a man who makes an offer he can’t refuse. The first three stories – the S stories of “Sardonicus”, “Sagittarius”, and “Sanguinis” are apparently the three stories he is most widely known for. The objectification of Playboy isn’t present though. The fact that Russell worked for Playboy does show in a few of the stories – one or two stories have a link with sex and violence. ![]() So of course, I had to get it and eventually read it. Helga’s mother was a Danish immigrant, her father an African-Caribbean man of whom she had little or no memory or connection to his family. If you couldn’t prove your ancestry and connections, you were tolerated, but you didn’t belong. What a unique voice and depiction of a rootless young woman searching for her place in the world, bereft, not finding a sense of belonging within family, when the world around her judged the two sides of her family as if they are different peoples because of the colour of their skin. “Oh, my” I uttered, as understanding of the meaning of the title, “Quicksand” sunk in. ![]() As I read the last sentence, I shouldn’t have been surprised, because the end was coming, there was no time for another escape, for the pattern of Helga’s life to continue. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This sounds like it all could get too complex to hold together in the reader’s head but it really doesn’t. We also never hear about from his mother or sisters directly, it’s up to his lovers to reveal what they know about his family and past. The reader only hears from Mr Nishino through the stories his lovers tell, never directly. The stories are not told in chronological order, but move from adulthood to high school and to his older age. The plot of The Ten Loves of Mr Nishino is simple – Mr Nishino’s lovers (all women) talk about their love affair with him. The Ten Loves of Mr Nishino is filled with that calmness, yet is rich in detail and atmosphere. It seems to be on the whole both calmer and stranger than fiction originally written in English and deal with people’s quirks more lovingly. It also implies that when men degrade women, the women that surround them show them their worth. The Colour Purple implies that when women are oppressed, other oppressed women will stand up for them. To be made small is to be made to feel “humiliated or inferior”. Alice Walker’s The Colour Purple implies that females empower each other when they are made small by others. She gives up her power because she believes she has none, but the women around her help her to reclaim that power. The main character in The Colour Purple is made to believe by men that she has no power, so she feels as if she has none. Alice Walker once said, “the most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any”. ![]() ![]() ![]() The last thing Nephele wants is to spend her days and nights alone with a seductive, arrogant god, but Tiressia’s future depends on Neri being their primary weapon, one only she holds the power to wield.Īs Thamaos aims his first wave of destruction at Neri, Nephele finds that not only is the Wolf more difficult to control than she believed, but that he’s far more human than she gave him credit for. You know, this is one of those cases where clearly things were bubbling in my psyche that I wasn't even aware of. There seems to be a connection to fairy tales running through Under the Moon.
